At Mystic Tigers our artists draw on skills developed and refined by artists from around the world for over two thousand years. Thought to have first been made by the ancient Celts in Europe it didn't take long (from a historical stand point) for this new type of battle armor to make it's way around the world. As it traveled from area to area, each region added their own unique twists. Because of this, Chainmaille is usually divided into three main types, those being the European, Persian and Oriental weaves. Most if not all areas also took the time to develop decorative types of the weaves.
Our lead artist has been working with chainmaille for over fifteen years and spent many of those years as the Chainmaille Craft Master for the Archers of Ravenwood before moving to Central Georgia. He has given many public demonstrations and taught the history of this long lived form of armor at Ren-Faires throughout Southern California.
Making full suits of armor is not exactly a task for those that lack the trait of patience. On adverage your typical maille shirt will take from four to five HUNDRED hours to make. This is taking into account that each ring has to be formed before it can be woven into the article being made. Chainmaille is very versital in it's uses. Just about anything that can be covered in cloth or leather can also be covered with this unique media. Even today chainmaille has it's uses. Many a butcher owes the fact that he still has all his fingers to a simple maille glove while full suits of maille protect S.C.U.B.A. divers around the world from the teeth of sharks.
